Praia da Luz which means ‘Beach of light’ is picturesque beach in the Algrave region of Portugal. The beautiful curved beach is popular for its golden colored sand and relaxed atmosphere. The beach is also awarded the Blue Flag (for which a number of marine, eco and safety criteria need to be fulfilled). It is an ideal family beach with full time life guards, nice hotels, superb restaurants and lots of water sports activities. The massive black rocks Rocha Negra, formed due to volcanic activities around 150million years back, are also worth watching.
History :
The Praia da Luz village (also known as Luz) was a small fishing village till recent times. It was ruled by the Romans in the past. Some remains of the Roman settlement like the aqueduct and a bathhouse can be seen even today. After the Romans, the Crusaders attacked in the 13th century. The Portuguese then ruled for a brief period till Luz was conquered by the Spanish. It was again finally reclaimed from Spain. A 16th century fort, which was built to protect against the pirates and now converted to a nice restaurant, is reminiscent of the past.
Climate :
The climate at the beach is pleasantly warm in the daytime and enchantingly cool at night, even in summers. It rains approximately 70 days per year.
