Praia de Pipa or Pipa beach is situated in the southern end of the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. It is about 90 KMs from the Natal by highway BR – 101. Pipa has over 300 days of gorgeous weather since it is located seven degrees south of the equator. The average temperature is 28°C and the average temperature of water is 27°C. Pipa beach is 10 KMs long surrounded by the crystal – clear waters, white and golden sands, coconut palms and spectacular cliff.
When the initial maps of the coastline were drawn by the Portuguese, in the Capitancy of Rio Grande, Pipa refers to the name Orotapiry or White man’s village (native Indian tongue). In 1626, it was named Itacoatiara , which indicates the painted cliff, later the name Ponta do Cabo Verde (Green Headland) was given, and now it is Pipa Beach (Praia da Pipa). The Beach is named Pipa because of the stones that seem to be barrels of wine or spirits at night.
