Flora and Fauna

Flora
The flora of Atlantic Ocean is one of the most interesting in all the oceans of world. Millions of plants are located in Atlantic Ocean. Most of them live only near the sunlit surface; however, a variety of bottom-dwelling plants can be found. These plants can have roots attached to the bottom of the ocean or be free-floating and drift about in the water.

Kelp
Kelps are large, brown seaweeds that live on the rocky shores of Atlantic Ocean. Kelp varieties contain only a single branch and reach approximately three feet long except Giant Kelp. It grows up to 200 feet tall. Ascophyllum nodosum is a type of kelp that is found most commonly in Atlantic Ocean. Kelp contains over 70 minerals, proteins, vitamins, trace elements and enzymes.

Phytoplankton
Phytoplankton is a plant that grows abundantly in many oceans and naked to the human eye. Like other plants, phytoplankton requires nutrients, water and sunlight to grow. Generally, they are single-celled and float in the water. Phytoplankton includes seaweed and algae, which can both be found in the Atlantic Ocean.

Seagrass
Seagrasses are flowering plants that live underwater. These plants produce oxygen and help to maintain water clarity. Turtle-grass, paddle-grass, manatee-grass, star-grass and Johnson's seagrass are some of the types of seagrasses that are found in Atlantic Ocean.

Thong weed
Thong weed is a plant that can be found around Kelp or on exposed shores. The fronds are small mushroom-shaped buttons that grow into long, strap-like leaves. The leaves of plant grow from center to the button up to six feet in length. Generally, these plants live for two to three years.

Fauna
Along with plants, the animals that live in Atlantic Ocean are worth mentioning.  There are many types of fish which live in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Georgia including shark, cod, pilchards and barracuda. Atlantic Ocean also has some interesting mammals like dolphin, walrus, sea lions, orca and seals. Penguins and puffins can be found in cold locations of Atlantic.

Shrimp
Shrimp lay their eggs in Atlantic Ocean from late March to September. They depend on a mix of fresh and salt water to survive. After laying their eggs, they enter in fresh and salt water area where they feed on small animals and bottom algae. They are the most valuable seafood of Georgia.

Right Whales
Right Whales can grow up to 60 feet long and weigh up to 100 tons and can vary in their size. These Whales have roughened patches of skin on their heads and are mostly black. According to the whalers the Whales were “right” ones to hunt and therefore, they are called as “Right Whales”. Over hunting caused to decrease the number of Right Whales. So, instead of hunting them, people often watch them for pleasure.

Sand Tiger Shark
The Sand Tiger Shark is very large and grows to 10 ½ feet as an adult. It has a mouthful of sharp, spike-like teeth. Generally, they are found near the surface of ocean, in mid-water or at the bottom of the ocean.

Seals
Seals are one of the many mammals that dwell in the Atlantic Ocean. They have smooth gray skin which helps them to swim quickly and gracefully. They don’t have fins like dolphins or other swimming animals. They can live on sand and in water and sometimes, are hunted by whales.
